When and how did you get in to the interior design industry?

Once upon a time, I wanted to be a mechanical engineer. About 3/4 of the way through getting my degree, though, I realized that engineering is incredibly uninspiring. I had creativity that was sitting dormant in the corner, begging to be let free. Architecture was my first choice, but with small children at home and a military husband who was gone most of the time, getting a degree in it wasn’t really an option at the time. My research into architecture careers and degrees, though, brought up another option: interior design. I’ll be eternally grateful that I ended up as an interior designer–it’s the perfect mix of structure and creativity. Not to mention that I have a talent for color and texture that I never would have discovered if I wasn’t a designer!

Tell us more about Dixie Willard Design…

My business is residential design, specializing in new-build custom homes, but I do have a soft spot in my heart for designing kids’ rooms. My favorite project ever was designing for a couple who have a board game company. Their love of comic books and action figures was so much fun to work with! Now that I think about it, it’s probably because I got to mix the new-build home side of things with the fun and freedom of a child’s room across the whole house.

What does the future have instore for Designing Dixie?

I’d love to be able to do more pro bono design for my favorite nonprofit organization. Ideally, I’d leverage the visibility and income from my design business and from Design+Style to be able to dedicate at least half of my time (and income) to service projects.

If you could only eat three foods for the rest of your life what would it be?

Avocados, blueberries, and my husband’s garlic Parmesan mashed potatoes

How has Mydoma Studio helped Dixie Willard Design?

Hands down the best thing about Mydoma Studio is its organization. Being able to have all of my project files, messages, invoices, and payments in one place that I can access from my laptop or on the go is priceless.
